What is Remedial Therapy?

What is a remedial massage?

There are many different styles of massage, each providing a therapeutic benefit. Many massage modalities tend to follow a set routine, however an experienced remedial massage therapist will always customise their treatment plan, in order to specifically address and target the problem area. A remedial massage assists the body to improve or restore normal movement and overall health, by stimulating blood flow, lymphatic drainage and increasing range of motion and flexibility to muscles, tendons and joints.

What makes Remedial Therapy different?

A Remedial Therapist, or Myotherapist provides more than just the massage itself. Remedial Therapy uses remedial massage techniques, as well as many other advanced hands-on deep tissue massage, joint mobilisation and myofascial release techniques, in order to treat, rehabilitate and release specific physical injuries and ailments, joint restriction and provide pain relief for a variety of chronic and acute complaints.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage has a profound positive impact in releasing and relieving deep and painful restrictions impacting the underlying muscles, soft tissues and joints of the body, particularly along the spine.

A skillful deep tissue massage therapist works with precision, purpose and sensitivity as they identify and relieve these excessive restrictions.

Sports Massage

Sports massage provides specialised treatment with the specific understanding of the particular demands placed upon the body by the athlete and their chosen sport.

With the primary purpose of returning you to your desired sports activity with the same or even better level of function, Sports Massage often includes more aggressive techniques that approach muscles more thoroughly and deeply including, remedial massage, trigger point therapy, cross fibre techniques and deep tissue massage.

BOOK NOW

Pregnancy massage combines remedial massage and deep tissue massage techniques which are specifically adapted to address changes a woman goes through during her pregnancy.

In the early stages the remedial therapist focuses on loosening the muscles related to stress and any niggling injuries the mother may have so these are not a concern in the later stages of the pregnancy.

As the pregnancy progresses to the second and third trimesters, treatment can greatly assist in bringing relief and balance for sore lower back, hips, sciatica, headaches, pubic symphysis, restless legs, sleep deprivation and fatigue.

Pregnancy Massage is just as important for the mother as it is for the child and is equally as important for new mothers during the nursing baby and infant period.

Please discuss your needs with either our pregnancy massage specialist, Barbara McKillop, or Chiropractor, Lisa Gilson. They will be happy to customise a treatment program for your ever changing needs during this amazing time of your life.

Chiropractic Support

Chiropractic is a drug and surgery free modality of treatment concerned with the diagnosis, management and prevention of disorders of the musculoskeletal system; this includes the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health.

Chiropractors work in partnership with their patients by utilising their clinical experience, and tailoring care to your needs and preferences. They are trained to treat musculoskeletal pains, and to facilitate health promotion, rehabilitation and patient education.

Frequently Asked Questions

What treatment plan can I expect?

Our caring and friendly treatment will commence by firstly looking at your overall health and medical history. We then establish a treatment plan to specifically address your complaint and/or health goals. For the best results, your treatment will normally run for an hour. Whilst we often provide immediate pain relief and increased function, you will receive professional advice and exercises designed to help you keep moving and out of pain.

What do I need to wear?

The treatment is definitely hands-on, however you will only need to take off clothes as necessary in order for us to massage the effected areas. Your modesty is always respected and you will always be kept covered with a large towel. For ease of access, most women wear a standard bra that unclips at the back. This will be unclipped while laying face down, so that we can effectively work on the back, neck and shoulder regions, but is clipped back together and covered with a towel before turning, or moving on or off the massage table. Underwear or elastic waisted shorts or pants are ideal when working on the lower back, hips and legs. Regardless of the area of your body requiring treatment, we respect your privacy and we ensure you will be treated with the utmost professionalism. Also please note; Lorin and Dean are both legally blind, so they won’t see you anyway!

Will the treatment hurt?

We often hear the saying, “no pain, no gain”, however this isn’t always the case. Painful and aggressive deep tissue massage isn’t always the most effective or comfortable form of treatment. If you are already suffering some kind of muscle, nerve or joint pain, it’s natural to expect that their will be some discomfort when treating the cause of the problem, however it’s interesting that many clients comment on how good it feels to finally have a therapist identify the epicentre of the problem and work with precision throughout the affected area. A skilled remedial massage practitioner should be able to work deeply into tight muscle areas and with the right techniques, be able to release the tissues with minimal pain, thus providing the greatest relief and improvement without an adverse reaction. Your feedback and communication throughout the treatment is also appreciated

Will I need to keep coming back?

Most people find immediate relief after their very first treatment with Lorin, however in order to solve the root cause of the problem, it may take 3-5 treatments. Occasionally treatment does take longer depending on how chronic or acute the problem is in the first place, however if we aren’t able to relieve your pain, or improve the quality of your movement and quality of life within this timeframe, then we will refer you on to some one else for further exploration. This would be very rare though, as Lorin has vast experience treating a wide range of problems and complaints, with excellent results! In an ideal world, your overall health and well-being would greatly benefit from having a massage / tune up, every 4-8 weeks. The decision regarding frequency of course will always be yours!

Do I need a referral and will treatment be covered by Medicare or my health fund?

No referral is specifically required, however many doctors, chiropractors and physiotherapists cross-refer to Remedial Massage Therapists for expert hands-on muscle treatment. Whilst massage isn’t covered by Medicare, many health funds do offer a partial rebate for Remedial Massage & Myotherapy treatment. Please ask and notify us of your needs and circumstances, so that we can ensure you are getting the very best treatment and value from your health care.
